BULLDOG Brunch is what you get when you mix traditional London brunch and G&Ts with a sun-soaked Ibiza party theme and a Scandi-style rooftop. The London based gin distillery has launched a party brunch concept in collaboration with Pikes Hotel Ibiza and the lifestyle app Urbanologie. We went along to yesterday’s opening event, in the intimate rooftop setting of Sisu London, not worlds away from the style of Frank’s in Peckham, minus the pink and Campari.
The music welcomed us in with a mix of ambient dance, funk and Euro house and a live saxophonist to set the scene –London’s grey sky was the only thing stopping it from feeling like an Ibizan beach club. Starting off with a BULLDOG G&T showcased the purity of the gin and its smooth citrus base, making it an ideal mixing spirit for cocktails. We sat down to a table set with all the ingredients needed for the make-your-own Red Snappers: gin, lemons, celery salt, tomato juice and Tabasco and Worcester sauce which came together to taste like a boozy and spicy gazpacho.
There was a sharing platter to start, piled with cured meats, crusty bread and salad before the chef brought out the set brunch menu in tapas format. It was cauliflower arancini rice balls, aubergine and goat’s cheese wraps, crisp calamari and vegetable samosas with a tamarind dip and pomegranate seeds. By far the best on the menu was the BULLDOG Gin-cured smoked salmon with beetroot and crème fraiche. Accompanied by Red Snappers and Bloody Marys, it’s a great menu for slow grazing and lounge partying.
Brunch in London is no longer a pretentious portmanteau meal for people who woke up too late to eat breakfast; it has very much earnt its place in millennial weekend plans as a Main Event. Trending across London, there are countless themes: hip hop brunch, bingo brunch and, from the grapevine, even “Strictly Come Dancing Drag Queen Brunch.” Here’s another one to add to the mix this season, so, if you ever wake up and find yourself in need of an Ibiza club night-out, served alongside food and Bloody Marys, we’ve found just the summer pop-up for you.
