London’s flagship international dance festival Dance Umbrella is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018. This year’s programme is jam-packed with innovative choreography from around the globe taking place from 26 September – 21 October 2018 in various venues across London.
Dance Umbrella’s mission is to celebrate 21st century choreography enthusiastically and collaboratively through an annual, international London festival, through year-round creative learning opportunities for all ages, and by developing choreographic talent. The aim is to entice audiences, nurture artists, innovate practice, and stimulate interest in the power of the body in motion.
Dance Umbrella 2018 opens with Big Dance Theater’s UK debut at The Old Vic with 17c, a romp through the bracingly frank diaries of Samuel Pepys co-directed by Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar.
The special event includes a unique festival-within-a-festival; guest programmer Freddie Opoku-Addaie curates his second Out of the System at Shoreditch Town Hall which features three vibrant nights of international dance and music. Furthermore, Ivan Blackstock presents CRXSS PLATFXRM as part of Out of the System, with new artists bringing fresh perspectives to street culture and dance.
