Interview: A Conversation With Emerging R&B Star, RIKI

Oct 25 2017 BY Jovanne Campbell

Meet Rickolette RIKI Simmonds, Jamaican born and bred, and Cleveland raised; an emerging young vocalist who records her own unique fusion of alternative R&B, Trap and New Soul. Sharing her debut single “Venting”, RIKI is proving just why she’s set to be the one to watch for 2018. “Venting” is a self-reflective ballad about human perception and misperception spiced with an edgy, hard-hitting patois chat.

We had a chat with RIKI about her upcoming plans for 2018 and what we can expect from her:

Bespoke Mag:

Tell us about your new amazing song “Venting”. How did it come about?

RIKI:

Venting started out as a freestyle at a point in time when I chose not to be passive anymore. Eventually I decided to keep the vibe and make it a real song. The track embraces my upbringing from Jamaica to my current attitude living in the US.

Bespoke Mag:

“Venting” is your first single and video, what should we expect from you in the future and what kind of sounds are you experimenting with?

 RIKI:

Expect more visuals and a different kind of vibes. I have a base in the Caribbean and spend quite some time there, so I’m experimenting with adding dancehall, R&B, Soul mixed with Trap. A hybrid element to whatever I’m creating.

Bespoke Mag:

So you have a Jamaican background but raised in the U.S, can we expect to hear more of a dancehall vibe in your future music or a possible collab with any dancehall artists?

RIKI:

Of course! I love dancehall music. It’s an integral part of my upbringing, and is included in the eclectic mix of music that I love to listen to; which inspires me. I have already done collaborations, it’s just about when I’m releasing.

Bespoke Mag:

Who would you say your main influences and inspirations are as an artist?

RIKI:

Bob Marley of course, because his music was personified as healing music. From an adolescent, I grew to appreciate the vibrancy of his music at vital times in my life. Sade is also another inspiration, but as a millennial I’ve also been inspired by artists like The Weeknd and Vybz Kartel.

Bespoke Mag:

It’s very early in your career but if the opportunity was handed to you, which artists would you most love to collab with?

RIKI:

I would for sure love to work with Sade, Erykah Badu and The Weeknd.

Bespoke Mag:

Are you currently working on any projects and if so, when can we expect it?

RIKI:

I have an album coming very soon entitled “Salience”. A couple of songs and videos from the project will be released in upcoming months. My next video “Lifted” will premiere in mid November 2017. The 12-track project is set for release in 2018.

Bespoke Mag:

Lastly, this is something we ask all artists; tell us your 5 favourite albums of all time?
