It takes a lot for me to go out on a Monday, especially after work. My Monday evenings are usually fixed by going to the gym and doing my meal preps for the week. However, on this past Monday, I ventured to the renowned Jazz Café for A Night of Neo-Soul, not really knowing what to expect, as you know, a lot of these cover nights resemble your local pub’s live music nights.
Nonetheless, what I witnessed was nothing short of brilliance, the singers on show were easily some of the best vocalists I’ve heard, no seriously, they were that good. I’ve been to countless concerts and seen some of the most heralded singers but it’s always the most intimate events where you really get hear real vocalists.
Accompanied by a live band the quartet performed the very best Neo-Soul tracks from Dwele’s “Find A Way”, Sunshine Anderson’s – female anthem – “Head it All Before” and even the alluring “Pretty Wings” by Maxwell. Of course, Ne0-Soul staple artists like Erykah Badu got a bit of extra love as the quartet performed all her greatest hits including my all-time favourite Badu track “Otherside of the Game”. Musiq Soulchild, D’Angelo and Anthony Hamilton were also covered too.
Given Jazz Café’s revamp, the show is really conducive for all love-birds thanks to the mood-lighting and intimate space. As for the music, what genre screams romance more than Neo-Soul aye? Make sure you’re at their next Neo-Soul night.
