Melanin Box Festival Returns to Celebrate Black British Arts, Theatre, Music, Film & Dance

Jul 29 2018 BY Zach Ekpe

The first weekend of August plays host to another, exciting, two day celebration of ‘beauty, & blackness’ – the Melanin Box Festival – hosted by ‘Initiative’ the “collaborative artistic duo” of Damilola ‘DK’ Fashiola (Artistic Director & Award Winning Artist with Theatre Royal Stratford East) & Wofai (Executive Director & established model).

The fest will be taking place for a second time after its highly-successful, sold-out debut back in 2015 and shall be focusing on increasing visibility and artistic opportunities for Black British creatives once again aiming to break-down stereotypes whilst bridging the gaps between British’s various subcultures and demographics.

Day one will include the ‘Pandora Acts’ – a series of selected individuals who will perform their non-conventional narratives in competition for the Pandora Award. On day two, ‘Synergy Actors’ will perform their own dynamic physical pieces interweaving powerful monologues with powerful movement – similarly to day one – actors will compete for a number of prizes.

Special guests last time round included Seraphina Beh of Eastenders, Bush Theatre and the West End, Kayode Ewumi a.k.a. R.S. creator of the iconic Hood Documentary, Tobi Bamtefa and many more. This year’s roster is even more attractive boasting names such as Laurence Olivier Award winner Bola Agbaje, powerhouse vocalist Ruth Brown from The Voice UK as well as a highly-anticipated screening of the Sundance Film Festival-premiered short film ‘The Right Choice’.

The event will run from 6pm on August 4th to 10.30pm the next day on August 5th and will showcase a range of acts, films, musical performances as well as activities and food on the day.
