Why You Need to Be At This Year’s Rototom Sunsplash

Jun 20 2018 BY Millie Shuter

A friend told me she went to Rototom Sunsplash last year and it was the best festival she´d ever been to. Sadly for her, it looks like this year is going to be even better. Taking place on the sunny Spanish beaches of Benicassim, with good vibes guaranteed, this week-long reggae festival is the world´s biggest and best. It´s the massive 25th Anniversary event and the line up promises to be better than ever. I literally could not be more hype to get on the Reggaebus (yep, that´s a thing and it´s free) so I can start skankin’ on the sand. For anyone on a budget this summer, looking for sun-soaked festivities, world class music and exceptionally positive vibes, Rototom Sunplash (16-22 August) has got it all. And we can still get back in time for Carni.

The festival´s motto this year is 25 Years Walking Together, which sets the tone for the international musical celebration that is to come. The eclectic line up includes too many global legends and OGs to name them all, but just to whet your appetite, here´s a few names: Beres Hammond, Proteje, Jimmy Cliff, Tarrus Riley, Julian Marley, Andrew Tosh (son of Peter, RIP), Fat Freddy´s Drop, Derrick Morgan and the Skatalites, and David Rodigan with a 25-piece orchestra. Add to that stellar selectah, a whole load of European heavyweights such as Alborosie, Morodo, Hollie Cook and Biga Ranx. And I´ve not even started on the Dancehall stage – just know Konshens is gonna be there and it will be wild. Then finally there´s my personal favourites (the official soundtrack to my Latin American travels), Orishas. The soulful salsa sound of this iconic Cuban rap group is not strictly reggae but they are so good, and so loved by Spanish speakers all over the world, that we will be truly blessed to experience these guys on the main stage.

For me, the music is the main motivation, but there´s a whole lot more happening too. If chilling on the beach gets too boring for you, the Rototom team is going all out to keep us busy with a carnival parade, workshops and loads of activities, especially if you wanna bring your kids. They really want families to feel welcome and are providing a bunch of award-winning child-friendly areas and activities aimed at building creativity and confidence through storytelling, crafts, circus school and sensory play for kids of all ages.

Rototom Sunsplash, has held tight to its core values of peace, love, tolerance, integration and respect since it first started, and that won´t change this year. NGO Exodus, part of the Rototom family, is currently reaching out to support social and voluntary organisations that work with migrants and refugees arriving in Europe.

So get your ticket and we´ll see you on the beach.

Rototom Sunsplash is from 16-22 August in Benicassim, Spain. For full line up, more info and tickets visit here!
