The Darkest Minds (Friday 10th August)
There is probably nothing that film studios love more than making a movie which already has an ingrained fan base before it is even made. This usually occurs when a film is adapting source material based on a book, comic book, tv series etc. The Darkest Minds is an example of this as it is a sci-fi film based on a young adult novel of the same name. Gwendoline Christie, Mandy Moore and Amandla Stenberg star in this movie and it tells a story of young teenagers who must hide from the government after obtaining superpowers.
The Meg (Friday 10th August)
Every summer, a film that I would personally consider to be a brainless blockbuster is released. Usually, that ‘honour’ falls to the Transformers films but it is actually The Meg who has that privilege this year. Jason Statham, naturally, is in the lead role of this movie which is about a group of scientists who have to prevent a 75-foot Megalodon shark from terrorising a beach. A ridiculous premise which may provide some ridiculous entertainment to those not expecting a masterpiece in filmmaking.
Unfriended: Dark Web (Friday 10th August)
To some extent, the same can be said for Unfriended: Dark Web which is a standalone sequel to 2014’s Unfriended. It a found footage horror film that focuses on a small group of friends who find a laptop which can access the dark web. However, they soon come to realise that the original owners of that laptop are watching them and their lives are at stake throughout the movie.
