Mary Magdalene (Friday 16th March)

Films centred around religion can be hit or miss. Clearly, they can be very divisive amongst the general audience and certain liberties are bound to be taken when it comes to storytelling. Still, Mary Magdalene looks like an interesting film which has a great cast.

Rooney MaraJoaquim Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the leads of Mary Magdalene and they have all given fantastic performances throughout their careers in various projects. The strength of the cast could be enough to entice people to see this film. Moreover, Mary Magdalene is the last film to be composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson who recently passed away so fans of his music should see the film for that reason.

Tomb Raider (Friday 16th March)

Whenever a film that is based on a video game is about to be released, my immediate thought is that it will not be any good. This is because no film based on a video game has ever been any good. However, Tomb Raider looks as though it could be half decent. The fact that Alicia Vikander is playing Lara Croft kind of got me interested.

Alicia Vikander is an Oscar-winning actress so to see her as the lead in Tomb Raider intrigued me. She also has a pretty good supporting cast to work with which includes Kristin Scott ThomasWalton Goggins and Dominic West. Moreover, director Roar Uthaug was lauded for his work on The Wave which was another positive. Tomb Raider has a lot going for it and it may be worth seeing.

Still, if neither Mary Magdalene or Tomb Raider appeal to you, then you can also see Peter Rabbit and/or The Square in UK cinemas too.
