I, Tonya (Friday 23rd February)
Films based on real-life events have the potential to be incredibly captivating, especially if the event in question is controversial and/or memorable. I,Tonya is a film which certainly fits that criteria. This biographical film focuses on figure skater Tonya Harding and the connection she may or may not have had to the attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan in 1994.
Margot Robbie plays Tonya Harding and her performance in the film has earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 2018 Oscars. Allison Janney is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Tonya Harding’s mother in the film. I, Tonya has been getting a lot of praise for the performances by Robbie and Janney as well as the way the story in the film was told. It is another Oscar film coming to UK cinemas so this film could be just for you if you like Oscar films and/or biopics.
Red Sparrow (Thursday 1st March)
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the best actresses working in the film industry today. She is 27-years-old and, already, she has four Oscar nominations, three of which were for Best Actress. Out of those four nominations, she won once award for Best Actress for her lead performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Fans of Jennifer Lawrence will be delighted that she has a new film coming out called Red Sparrow.
The story centres on Jennifer Lawrence’s character who is a Russian spy sent to make contact with and seduce a CIA agent, played by Joel Edgerton, who holds sensitive information. While the film has received mixed reviews, that should not deter you from seeing Red Sparrow if you liked the trailers, find the story to be intriguing and/or like the cast in the film which also includes Charlotte Rampling and Jeromy Irons.
