New Films In UK Cinemas: 23rd March – 29th March

A Wrinkle in Time (Friday 23rd March)

Ava DuVernay is an extremely talented director as we all saw with her work on Best Picture-nominee Selma as well as the hard-hitting documentary 13th. It was only a matter of time before she took on a big-budget film and A Wrinkle in Time certainly fits that criteria with a budget of $110 million.

The film is based on the highly popular novel of the same name and has a powerhouse cast in the form of people such as Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey. While A Wrinkle in Time has received mixed responses, it has been praised for its lead performance by Storm Reid, its visuals and its positive messages.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (Friday 23rd March)

It has been five years since the release of Pacific Rim which was directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film received mostly positive reviews and did reasonably well from a financial perspective so I can see why it was decided that a sequel should be made. Guillermo del Toro, however, did not return to direct Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Steven S. DeKnight, showrunner for Daredevil, is directing this sequel that takes place ten years after the events of the original. The film stars Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny and John Boyega and fans of Pacific Rim, while perhaps disappointed that Del Toro did not come back to direct the film, should be excited to re-immerse themselves in this world.

Ready Player One (Thursday 29th March)

For me, Steven Spielberg is the greatest film director of all time. He has consistently made great films since the 1970s with very few missteps. His most recent film, The Post, was fantastic and Ready Player One looks awesome. The whole premise and look of the film feels like a throwback to his earlier work and I am confident that it will be, at the very least, an entertaining film. However, at the same time, it has a tough task to please fans of the book that this film is based on.
