New Films In UK Cinemas: 29th June – 5th July

Adrift (Friday 29th July)

Shailene Woodley is one of my favourite young actresses working today. Her work in films such as The Descendants and The Spectacular Now as well as the television show Big Little Lies has really impressed me. It seems as though she has picked an extremely different and challenging acting role when it comes to Adrift.

She stars alongside Sam Claflin in this film that is based on the true survival story of a couple who were stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after a hurricane and must find their way back to civilisation against all the odds. Woodley’s performance has been lauded by the majority of film critics and it seems as though her career is continuing to go on an upward trajectory with Adrift.

Sicario 2: Soldado (Friday 29th July)

Sicario 2: Soldado is a sequel to Sicario which itself was one of the best films I had the pleasure of seeing in 2015. In my opinion, it was robbed of an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and it may have indeed been worthy of actually winning this award over Spotlight. Sicario 2: Soldado is a film that I have been excited about seeing since it was announced that a sequel was happening.

Even though it was a shame that Denis Villeneuve was not able to come back and direct this film, having Taylor Sheridan return to write the script for the sequel as well as having Benecio del Toro and Josh Brolin come back to the cast is fantastic. Sicario 2: Soldado has a solid chance to be a worthy sequel to Sicario and I look forward to seeing whether this film can deliver on its potential.
