Bellanger is a beautifully fronted restaurant located directly opposite Islington Green. Upon entering, we immediately feel the ambiance of the restaurant as we were greeted by high ceilings with beautiful light fixtures, cute booths in various shapes and dark wooden panels. Bellanger is a traditional French brasserie with their food deriving from both French and German influences.
As we confirmed our reservations, the staff offered to take our coats to put into the cloak room and took us to our booth. The service throughout the night was exemplary as staff members checked on us regularly and answered questions about the dishes on the menu with great detail and knowledge. We were even offered a mini wine tasting session as it was difficult to decide which bottle to for due to the shear variety of wine on offer. We went with the refreshing Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Vignerons de Valençay, Loire in the end.
For our starter, we decided to go for the large seared scallops which was accompanied by crab croquettes and could easily be shared between two. Although there was a variety of starters that we could choose from, none of them really screamed out to us so we decided to go for the scallops which are listed as a main dish. With that being said, it was a great decision as they were amazing.
The mains here are the real showstoppers – generous portions of classic French food that are perfect for a cold winter’s evening – my Conflit of Duck came which was situated on top of wild mushrooms in red wine jus, every bite was delicious. The scrumptious Grilled Chicken Paillard with verjus dressing was an equally generous portion and left us completely stuffed.
As you step into the Bellanger, it immediately feels like a formal and classy place where you may automatically assume that what’s on the menu is out of your budget. It proved otherwise with their great prices and the restaurant can be used for various reasons such as breakfast, brunch, meetings, drinks or of course dinner.
