Last night Islington Assembly Hall was the venue of a very special Shelter Presents concert. The opportunity to see Skepta perform live was given to the public with all the night’s proceeds going to the charity Shelter.

Skepta has previously said “I’m not a rapper, I’m an activist” and the night’s activities showed this. After BBK’s DJ Maximum warmed up the crowd for his good friend, the bass tones of the eponymous song from the album Konnichiwa let us all know that the main event was about to begin.

With a more intimate audience than that of his headline show at Ally Pally last year, Skeppy’s passion for the cause at hand was felt throughout the concert. The energy was replicated by the crowd and when Skepta began to perform his interlude off Drake’s more life album I swear everyone’s drinks went flying.

Skepta wasn’t content with just giving the gift of himself he also brought out members of his BBK (and literal) family in JME and Shorty. The special guests continued with Skepta causing about half the crowd to faint when he brought out the Pretty Flaco, A$AP Rocky, to perform Put That On My Set.

The inspiration for the night was of course to raise money for the homeless in London and words from Skepta and a surprise cameo from Idris Elba reminded all in attendance of how benefit cuts have negatively affected countless families in London. Thankfully the evening provided a bright moment as over £30K was raised for the Shelter charity!
